Living in the outer suburbs of the city, wildlife is more commonly seen. There is a greater variety of birds, insects and even monotremes! An echidna decided to wander through the garden and up the driveway about a week ago. I have never seen an echidna in the 'wild' before.
My partner made sure it didn't want to cross the road - it just wanted to get through the fence into the neighbour's yard with the tall trees. Because there was no gap large enough for it to dig through, it walked up the long driveway, turned the corner and started heading back down the hill. I would guess that the tall trees harbour lots of ant nests. I've discovered randomly dug holes in my garden and paths since this visitor - I wonder if he's still around?
This is an example where full 'floor-to-ceiling' wooden fences may not be the best idea for the native wildlife. I'm beginning to prefer 'green' fences, made of useful (or even decorative) trees.
