To separate the pumpkins, zucchini and melons from the rest of the garden, I built a new garden bed in the back yard. In previous years, these vegetables took over my garden, completely smothering the other plants. Of course, this is a no-dig garden, and was established on weedy grass with an underlying clay base. Let's see how the veggies perform.

We were flooded a few weeks back - 20cm of water sat in our garage for about 3 hours. Plenty of time for our supply of packing boxes to soak the water and become useless. Using the unwaxed boxes and those with as little printing as possible, I covered the ground in several layers, and then added some newspaper as a weed mat.

A few bags of compost and manure, layered with lucerne and straw completed the garden bed.

I'd love to edge it, to keep the weeds and the lawn out, but am rather strapped for funds at the moment. Pumpkin, and melon seedlings were the first to go in, making space in my seed raising tray for zucchini and cucumber seeds.
